AquAeTer was retained by this client to evaluate their current wastewater treatment system and identify optimization opportunities in their pulp and paper mill ASB treatment process. AquAeTer staff were led by the legendary technical direction of Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder who was deemed the Godfather of Industrial Wastewater Treatment. Our team reviewed and evaluated the existing wastewater treatment plant and developed conceptual interim and final alternatives for the wastewater treatment system with the planned addition of an oxygen delignification system. The initial scope of work included: evaluation of data provided by the mill; implementation of the kinetic biological treatment models; the application of the Eckenfelder model to several alternative concepts designed to meet the project objectives; and a recommendation of the conceptual alternative that would produce the best overall result.
Additionally, a Work Plan was designed detailing plans for the laboratory testing of wastewater degradation rates for the mill. The goal of the laboratory testing was to determine the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) degradation rate constant for the current system so that more refined calculations could be made to determine the optimum design changes to the system, such as, aeration horsepower and surface aerator location.
